I have kept records of the situation. I have notes from co-workers telling of what happened. I am not in a Union. I don't know anywhere else to go with this except an attorney and I don't think that will do any good as I'm not really in a protected class. I just wish I could run out and grab another job but it doesn't seem to be happening. Thanks for your advice. I feel so beat down. I don't even want to go out of my house.

Dear "pushonundertherug":

Are you represented by a union? If so, see your union rep immediately. If you have filed reports concerning the bullying, make copies and keep the copies at home. If you have received e-mails from your bullies, make hard copies for your records (keep at home). If you are represented by a union, you should be getting copies of everything that is going into your personnel/HR employee file.

From what workers report, you will likely be denied unemployment benefits if you quit your job but will have the right to appeal the decision. It will be up to you to prove that you had a good cause quit. If there are opportunities to appeal, do so. Tell the Employment Development Department person what happened to you. Keep a date log of what happened to you on the job with names and circumstances.

Whether you stay on the job or not is your decision. I can only tell you that your health and well being are worth so much more than that bad job that you say you are in.

I wish the very best for you. "Work shouldn't hurt" ... a quote by Dr. Ruth Namie.

Sincerely,

I work in a Magnet Hospital and have been bullied from day 1 by co-workers and supervisors. I have went to HR, file reports thru the 3rd party line provided by employer. The times I have done that a couple days later I was called out by my supervisor's boss and asked questions about the report I had filed. The report was a complaint on my boss. I didn't get a warm fuzzy feeling like she was going to address my concerns but what I did get, was a couple weeks later an unsatisfactory job performance write up placed in my file without being informed of its existance! I have did my job exactly the same for 3 yrs but now I'm doing it wrong. Go figure. When I found this in my file and read it and it said I had received coaching and discussed expectations etc. I freaked out. No one had said a word to me about my performance! I left my work and filed another report. I have been ridiculed. Stuff spread around by bully saying I was sleeping with boss. My personal info spoke of to others because this person has access. I try to transfer out of dept. but am blackballed. I can't do it anymore. My last report got me called in to HR. Asked a lot of questions. They wanted names of who had told me what.I didn't give them. 2 hours later supervisor comes and gets me accompanied by 1 of people that was in room with HR. I received a couple more write ups. One co-worker told me to F--- Off a few months ago. I documented it and went to SV and HR. nothing done to bully. She's worse now she's even been empowered. If I leave will I even be able to draw my unemployment? I truly don't know what to do. I've only touched on a couple of instances. Help

Advice #1 ALways document, document, document any unethical or unacceptable behavior.
Advice #2 There are clearly HIPPA violations from HR. HR should never be involved in employee's health information. They should have an office with professional staff dealing with these matters, and this office should be the one talking to your medical providers. This office can't ever disclose your medical condition to HR. THey just need to make sure your company complies with your medical provider orders. You can report this violations to your local Health Department, HIPPA division, I would also check for any possible discrimination under ADA. For harassment and retaliation, I advise you to contact your local DOL. Department of Labor for advice and guideliness under your particular state regulations.
God Bless!

Hi, I think you followed the first step, confronting the "offender". In this case I wouldn't have confronted her. I would have presented all the evidence to the respective chain of command in your organization following established procedures, they would have been obligated to protect your privacy and respond at least within 24-48 hrs. Now is not only an issue of dishonesty from that Nurse, but now you are being retaliated against for have reported an unethical issue. Let them know that is their decision not to act upon your reporting, but they are obligated to protect you from hostility. And document, document, document everything! She is defamating you, which you can take legal action for, and also keep in mind that your employeer is obligated as well to provide a safe, and hostility and retaliation free environment. Good luck to you!

For some background on my situation please see my breakout reply/post and subsequent recant of some really terrible things I said. I was a little upset after realizing lawfirms only help employers of the bullied to not get sued into oblivion.

http://www.workplacebullying.org/2011/10/19/sponsors

I was helped considerably by HR in the begining. I had gone to "a medical facility" [name moderated] for help with the stress and anxiety a three day suspension and 60 day eval period was causing me. My crime: leaving my supervisors office and slamming the door behind me when his "discussion" with me about recent tardiness began with, excuse me here, "What the Fuck is your problem", and, "Do you have a Fucking problem with authority?"

I called "the medical facility" [name moderated] on my second suspension day and was referred to workplace health, or something likr that, who said I would need authorization from my HR dept to use "the medical facility" [name moderated] since the injuries occured at work. I had not intended to open a workers comp claim, and was reluctant at first. HR was great about not even questioning the validity of my injuries or claim and filed the DWC-1 form immediately.

Dr. Gary Namie, more people need to use w/c as a starting point for help dealing with bullying at work. Target's injuries are real, but also invisible, Two things happen right away that help you tremendously. Your injuries are diagnosed and documented, and any further bullying screams retaliation and HR will advise the attacker(s) to back off for fear of some real trouble for the company, and potential lawsuit, should there be another incident that is reportable by the target.

However, HR as champions of your cause ends there abruptly. The initial Doctor visit and all follow-up visits, contrary to HIPPA laws or expected medical-information confidentiality, is shared directly with HR after each visit. So be careful what you tell the Doctors and nurses. Any loopholes can and will be exploited by HR, so just remember its a compny Doctor visit, not a confessional. Saying you hate your boss or have made a complaint to their ethics hotline will most certainly get back to managment.

People should be directed to this section of your website on HR first. HR as a tool of Management has opened my eyes about the true nature of HR and how their loyalty to Management only adds to the problems we are dealing with here.

Finally, if you do follow the intra-site link to the "Cut the Bullies Loose" blog post and my series of replys, I must warn anyone who might be considering confronting the bullying person directly not to do it. The last sentence of the last reply said ominously, "I cant wait to see what Thursday brings". I was pushed over the edge by the boss mentioned in those replies and confronting him may have ruined any chance I had of keeping my job. Here's what happened on Thursday:

At precisely noon on Thursday, 15 minutes after end of lunch for Production people,
I needed a place to jot some things down. I went into the cafeteria and sat down. He must have followed me because as I was writing (preparing some notes for a meeting with the Ethics Officer), he suddenly appeared next to me saying, "You need to go back to your bench right now". I said "I'm almost done writing this and I will as soon as I'm done". That wasn't good enough. he leaned in further and continued, "Its not lunch time, and since your on 60 day eval, you're not supposed to be away from your bench unless its a lunch or break time". "OK", I said, "just a minute", and, "I'm almost done". "J" [name moderated], he said not letting up, and growing very irritated, "I need you to go back to work right now!", and this is where I lost it. Completely out of character for me, and as a result of pent up anger and frustration, I stood up and yelled "And I need to Fucking finish writing, OK?", and sat back down.

He left and went directly to HR, got them to go with him and said, "We need to finish this right now", (As I heard it from a wittness), grabbed his boss and a junior executive and all went into a conference room. This points out a key trait of the perpetrator of bullying in the workplace, which is to expand their sphere of influence beyond what their job classification calls for. The "bully" uses swearing and yelling to affect control over what should be someone elses responsibility. Like telling HR and his Manager boss when and where to have a meeting with no notice. A good Manager would not let a lower level manager get away with this.

Enter HR the devil. Two hours later I was called into HR and spoken to very nicely and asked to tell her what happened. She took notes, but as is usualy the case, gave no indication that any of my points were valid or would change what had already been decided, which was to send me home for one day while the incident is investigated and then call me on Monday with when I was to return to work, if I was to ever return. I know now that HR was powerless to to change the outcome of the situation, even if they had wanted to. She was there to give me the bad news that in three days I was most likely no longer going to be employed.

The way it stands, the Ethics Officer (not HR) called me that afternoon at home and asked for my resignation in exchange for the standard layoff compensation pay, and for giving up my right to sue the company. I drafted an agreement which takes into account the value I place on restitution in the courts, and that I sincerely wish to remain employed there, and get back to doing what I love, I'm good at, and is the source of great satisfaction in my life.

The lesson I've learned here is to use workers comp to document your injuries early, and to lay low and not take the bait if they're trying to make you fight back at them.
You will lose that battle.

Ariel,

I have great sympathy for your situation. As someone who has had their share of unfair treatment, I can say you have acted with courage and determination. What you have done is proven to yourself that you are not afraid of the 'system' and you did your best to be seen in the light you know in your heart reflects that you are a good person.

The outcome was unsatisfactory from the standpoint of getting your job back, getting the other parties to acknowledge your worth, etc. But you tried, and that is all anyone can do. Try not to let bitterness affect the potential for good things to happen for you in the future.

I wish I could give you some more practical advice. You must feel good about yourself because you stood up for what you knew was right. Just imagine the regret of not trying to clear your good name. And believe me, they may never say it but they have a lot of respect for you for taking them on and taking on the system as well.

I hate to say it but it may be time to move on and build on the strength this experience has given you. In my eyes you have won. Good job, and keep fighting the good fight.

I could really use some advice here. Long story short, I blew the whistle on some really bad stuff going on the HR. (example I was being made the cleanup pee on the bathroom walls that I believe the manager did) I tried first going to my District manager because the problem was the manager. He told me he would take care of it and kept sweeping it under the rug. I finally went to human resources because not only was it a hostile work environment but the manager had placed his hands on me. HR came in did an investigation and somehow because I did not remember cussing when the manager put his hands on me I was not only written up on a final warning but the manager got a promotion. The HR person told me if it was up to her I would be fired. Since then I have been harassed and bullied not only by my district manager but Human resources. The district manager called me up and repetitively asked me over and over if I was going to resign. I answered his question with the same answer every time but he kept asking me. They are also requesting another copy of my medical records to find out if I am fit for duty because I have seizures. I have not only provided this once but a second time when I went out with a seizure in 2007. (I have worked for the company 6 years and they were well aware of my medical issued when they hired me.) They are also now requesting a note for me to have Friday evenings off to go to services because I am Jewish. I have not only gotten permission prior to have this time to observe the Sabbath but they have been accommodating me all this time with my request. The last straw is I went out sick with a bad virus which caused vertigo. The doctor not only said I needed to stay home due to being contagious but you cannot drive with severe vertigo. I have been out for 2 weeks now. HR called me and I put her on the speaker phone and she interrogated me on why I have been out even though my husband has been in constant communication with my manager of my condition and improvements as well as delivering my doctors notes to him. She was rude to me and my husband when he tried to answer on my behalf because I was so sick. I then had my doctor’s office call and tell me that she had called them earlier and was very unprofessional and rude. They told me she was interrogating them on my condition and was badgering them to give out my personal medical history to them which is a violation of HIPPE. She was trying to get my doctors office to break the law. When she could not get the information from the nurse she demanded to talk to the doctor. I find this behavior not only unprofessional but unethical. I feel as if I am being bullied, singled out, and retaliated against. I need advice please help.

Dear "Ariel",

You have posted on the HR Failed Me Forum which is a forum of the anti-bullying Workplace Bullying Institute located in Bellingham, Washington in the United States. I have no familiarity with processes in your country.

In the U.S., a person can send important documents by way of certified mail, and pay extra for a return receipt (the person receiving must sign for it). Another way to ensure that a document or documents is received is have a third-party messenger personally deliver the documents, and the messenger has the receiving party sign for the documents. The document of receipt might itemize each of the documents. Another way is to hire an attorney/solicitor to handle the situation, however, this can be costly.

I am very sorry that you lost your job, and I sincerely hope that things will get better for you.

I work in a federation of schools and was dismissed on grounds of capability due to ill health three months ago. I know that my Executive Head was already friendly with the HR. They were ignoring the fact that i felt I had been treated unfairly. The union advised me what to write on the appeal letter. I appealed against this judgement and asked for the minutes then more than a couple of weeks later I got the notes of the meeting and I requested to make amendments. I then get an email telling me that I need to submit them as part of the appeal hearing paperwork. I send them in four days before the appeal with my paperwork and in the appeal hearing I am told that it is too late to consider them as too much time has passed. I say that i was told to submit them with my paperwork. (there is considerable ommision and some wrong factual information) they then tell me that there is no point looking at them but say that my amendments can be attached to the notes. I then tell them and evidence with names/dates in my paperwork etc that I feel I have been bullied and harrased. The appeal focuses on whether the hearing was judged to be fair. The new committee ask the old chair of the last hearing if he would have done anything differently this time round, considering the new information and he advises them 'no' so I feel that my case has not really been explored. There is also another fact which I think is significant and that is that when I sent in my paperwork on the Monday, I had received no confirmation and after three emails by Wednesday,I discover that much is missing and I have to forward it again, it is only sent out that evening. None of the Governors appear to have any paperwork in front of them other than the paperwork sent in by the headteacher (mostly wellness reports) My union rep asks if all the paperwork was received and they say yes- they were up late reading it. I do not on reflection believe that they were given a fair amount fo time to read it and absorb it. I actually wonder what they did receive as they seemed confused when I mention the amended minutes. My federation is a Church federation where the statement on the website seems to mock what has ahppened to me.

Hi, I read hrarecrap comment, and I just thought that I would respond to the so called " laws" against bullying. I work in the catholic education system and I've been bullied for 6 years by my principal. I tried to seek help internally, and whenever I mentioned a formal complaint I was advised against it, that it would be detrimental to me more that the principal etc. Even my union said that even if I made a complaint that the principal would be found innocent as there are no witnesses, and that the investigations are done by those who best interests are served by backing the principals anyway. In the end my only protection came when I made the formal complaint, and I'm relatively safe until the investigation is over, in the meantime I'm looking for another job. So much for laws in Australia.

Well, don't give up. Bring everything you have to a lawyer specialized with Employment Law. Now this is important, you'll have to research the attorneys and learn if they currently represent corporations, businesses and the like or in the past. If in the past, are they still or why did they leave. They must be interested in hearing what you have to say. I just finished an employment law class taught by a circuit court judge and mental abuse, harrasssment is easy to prove in court than you might think. In addition, the judges are highly sympathetic to your situation.

Lastly, you need to stand up and see this through the end or it will haunt you the rest of your days and make you more than mean.

I am not here to complain about HR, because I don't think that HR is the problem at all.
The problem is that organizations let serial bullying and mobbing continue. I want nothing else than to expose these bullies who commit these crimes--and to stop it from happening. Bullies will spread lies, rumors and do anything to make themselves look better. Right now I'm in the middle of it as a target and when I find out some strange thing said, I just laugh. I know in my heart this is not the best thing to do and that I should be "fighting back" per the advice of my fiancé, parents, friends and lawyer acquaintances. But it is hard to know how to fight back, especially when the mobbing is done so covertly. I do know that for anyone who experiences this, it is not deserved. I've found that the bully/bullies will try to make you look bad and even make you look like the bully by twisting words. It's ridiculous! I think there need to be more resources out there to fight back and that organizations need to disclose information about how to stop and recognize such crazy behavior.
I know that we can push through and put an end to this madness--more than anything, look inside yourself for support and work on being confident and resilient to the nonsense.

Blimey, do you work for a certain public-service media organisation as well? Or just another institution where 'bullying inadequates' (as our lot were recently called in the national press) have taken over.

You're not paranoid. Even other people who are being bullied in my department have been 'got at' by HR and the management and have been frightened into silence.

The Namies are at the forefront of the 'Healthy Workplace' legislation that's addressing workplace bullying in the USA. Can't wait to start an request on this new ePetitions site to have legislation to stop workplace bullying debated in the UK Parliament!

HR_ARE_CRAP on "bullied, lied to and HR investigation is complete waste of time"

I was bullied at work and logged a formal complaint with my HR department naively thinking they would help me. (Never trust HR and dont goto them unless you are resigning!)

I basically explained everything how I have been verbally bullied and my work has been damaged / affected by others, who witnesses were etc. They said they would investigate.

They investigated and witnesses couldnt remember, everything was made to be like there was a reason for them happening and I was told I was being paranoid.

Now I know 100% I am not paranoid and no matter what some crap investigation says I know 100% I have been a target of Workplace bullying / Mobbing, the problem is the system is geared to hide everything and protect the company and the person is question who has been bullied suffers and feels let down.

The UK needs laws to protect people from workplace bullying, I think Canada and Australia have implemented laws why dont the UK do the same?????

HR are a complete waste of time.

What I have learnt

1) Never trust HR
2) Dont believe anything HR tell you
3) HR will side with the bully and hide everything to cover up so that the company is ok.
4) Do not trust managers or anyone else.

I totally align with you PissedHRgirl.

When I was kid I was raised with mid-Western values to help others and work for the betterment of the greatest good of all. Imagine my surprise to emerge from the same if not deeper entrenched cultural behavior of the largest integrated health care system that the Bully Institute founders escaped. Darn to not doing better research. ☺

The short of my bully journey through the above has been one of the most disappointing experiences in my adulthood to challenge my core values and beliefs in the good of people. After reporting a harassing manager to Human Resources (HR) and he was pushed out the door, I was told by the Vice President of HR that if I wanted to move up in my career I would have to leave the organization. Doubting s/he would have the pull to keep me down, I worked hard for the next 3 years to create a great reputation and develop options in other divisions. Meanwhile, the new leadership was advised I was a bad seed as they brought in new staff who were also advised of such. My performance was always rated high, but in the end when all new people were in place I was ranked as a poor employee with massive weaknesses in all of my strength areas (i.e., the new silly performance behavior I am told). I refused to sign the review and decided an exit to a healthier culture was in store even though the economy had become quite horrible. As I resigned from the organization, I negotiated to not have a contest to my filing of unemployment knowing it would probably be a long job search even with a great deal of experience and new education. It was insinuated I would not receive good referencing in the industry, which I challenged asking why that would happen after all of my high marks and impact and that behavior being illegal. Now more than 14 months into my job search, I can testify that the intense bullying I received inside has paled to the back-door black balling I have encountered subtly similar communications echoing the originating HR VP’s wording, but not solid enough to bring a definitive law suit against the organization and leadership.

The lessons I have learned are wide and keep unfolding. First, I will not go to HR if the normal professional boundaries are not respected, but just leave letting others know about the culture. Second, I will not stand for any level of bullying from anyone again. I have had to pay a deep price professionally, personally, financially, and emotionally that I will not allow anyone at any employee level to force themselves upon me repetitively degrading command and control nature again. Third, friends are people who stand with you through it all and are not to be sought out in a work situation. As one friend told me, the people he works with are not his family. Fourth although I have not landed in organization yet, I feel a need to help others who may have or are encountering any type of bullying. The employment lawyer I consulted to arrive at my exit decision stated that organizational leaders can be as icky as they want to be short of breaking the law. The bullies I have encountered and continue to navigate should not be part of anyone’s experience. Net: I still believe in the greatest good and helping, but I also believe in back handing bullies into accountable legislation that prevents good people from enjoying work and their lives.

I was bullied by 2 co-workers. Tried to talk to them with no luck. Went on for several months when I finally went to my supervisor. HR did an investigation. One of the co-workers got a promotion after the investigation was complete! My boss told me I was sensitive and that "You need to get yourself together." Bullying continued. Another person at work was also bullied by the same people. Went to boss who said she would again do investigation if hostilities did not stop. At that time I came forward and reported that the two coworkers had continued bullying me and one had questioned/harassed me about reporting them. This led to that person's termination. The other person stayed. Yikes. Management told me they would do everything to make it better? Acted shocked when I gave my report. Now retaliations (from other co-workers) have begun. Fired employee is good friends with two influential people at work. I am positive that person is continuing to tell lies about me/continuing to try to ruin my reputation at work. Boss told me she was worried about the person who had been fired! What! Boss is close to one of the people who are currently bullying..looks up to that person, brags about them. This person (co-worker) is very close to another person in management. Do I go back to my boss/HR and say something again? Do I ask my immediate supervisor to sit in on a meeting with co-workers so I can talk to them about the bullying and clear my reputation? That is what my inclination is. I am having anxiety/sleep problems, due to this ongoing situation. Dread going to work every day. Want to leave, but job market is tight and I absolutely need health care benefits. Am highly educated with a lot of experience. Am desperate and would appreciate feedback!

I worked at a hotel one time back in the 1990's. One day I came in and was told that an entire soccer team was turned away at the door because of a mistake I had made in data entry. The only problem was, *I was on shift* at the time the manager told me this mistake had been made. There is no way I could have missed both a soccer team trying to check in AND the mistake I supposedly had made- I was there at the front desk during the time this supposedly happened. They lied. They made up the incident in order to say I hadn't done my job properly. When I called them out on the lie the response I got was, "Well... you're still in trouble for it." Talk about damned if you do, damned if you don't!

Dear College Student:

You are much too young to be suffering so from a part-time job. The anxiety attack that sent you to the emergency room was a big red flag that your job is now affecting your health. No job is worth damaging your health. Your part-time job is already costing you in medical expenses. Is it worth it?

Please write back and tell me a little more about yourself. Are you in community college, a private school, a state university? What is your college major? Are you a good student? Do you live at home with your parents? Do you need to work full time vs. part time?

Please check with the student job placement office at your school, and see if you can apply for an on-campus job and/or get a referral for an off-campus job. Get to know the person that works in the student job placement office. Go there 2-3 times a week and check the job board. Be very nice to this person as this person can give you job leads.

In my community, college students have jobs off campus such as courtesy clerks in grocery stores, working at local restaurants, baristas at coffee shops, gardening, tutoring, working at the local fast food restaurant, etc. One major fast food restaurant has been hiring across the U.S. while another fast food restaurant offers a better salary than the aforementioned fast food restaurant while offering promotional opportunities as well.

Go to the financial aid office at your school, and see if there are any college grants that you can apply for. Did you fill out the FAFSA (free application for federal student aid) form last spring? If you didn't, make sure that you do next spring.

Hope to hear from you soon. I'm very sorry that you had this terrible job experience. Work shouldn't hurt.

Sincerely,

I'm new at this front desk job. I'm young, only 21, and my workplace bully is well into his 50s. He's been here for over 6 years as the Night Auditor, and he's actually a good worker whose knowledge of our check-in system dwarfs the rest of the staff's.

This is my first time working at a hotel. I make and accept my beginners mistakes, but as I learned more and more about how hotels operate, I realized that I was being bullied. Mistakes in data entry that never even get checked by the Housekeeping ladies (they don't use our computers), mistakes that could never have possibly amounted to lost money or time, were met with humiliation, belittling comments, and harassment.

This coworker has and continues to blame me and my intelligence for other people's mistakes or decisions. I cannot make my own decisions here, for if even the slightest, most unimportant breach of rules takes place I am met with threats that I will lose my job. The owner will let someone park their car horizontally across 3 spaces, and as soon as the Night Auditor gets here he yells at me and starts swearing. The last time this happened, he literally shouted that I must leave the office "get out!": for a decision I didn't even make!

I landed myself in the emergency room last week, I thought I was having a heart attack. It turns out it was Anxiety, something I nor anyone in my family has ever had. I get daily attacks around 2:30p (my shift starts at 3:00) and 10:30p (I change shifts with the night auditor at 11:00). They are the most painful at times when I am actually not working, but they are always at 3 or 11 (sometimes past 12).

After I had such an alarming panic attack I decided to talk to the owner of the franchise. My therapist (whom I just starting seeing) thinks my stress is work related, and I can't see any other explanation for such sudden anxiety. I even vent all of my workplace frustration to my parents and roommates - they're sick of it.

The owner told me not to worry about it. That's just how the auditor is, he's really picky. However, I have written evidence that he does not treat me fairly and deals with my mistakes as if I lose the company money every week (I have never lost this company money in my 4 months of employment). I know for a fact that he talks negatively about me behind my back. Other employees have noted things like "[Night Auditor] really hates 'X' [name removed by moderator]", and that really saddens me.

The worst part is I cannot note facts without him becoming exceedingly irate with me. I can't even show him that I am learning. I discovered something about our system that he had been incorrectly assuming for 6 years, but I knew I couldn't tell him about it. I have no evidence that the report that I wrote about it even made it to the boss.

The Night Auditor made me take a competence quiz. It wasn't hard at all, as I had been working this job for over three months. However, when he graded it I got a C. I looked over the entire thing and couldn't find one legitimate error - every single question that was marked wrong was a simple disagreement in definition or term. If my understanding of this job reflected my quiz grade I would have literally never dropped a correct cash drop. I also would have never given anyone correct change, entered any reservations in 3 months, or have completed a single correct check-in.

When he went over the quiz with me, specifically the section where he marked incorrectly my understanding of how to give cash change for a transaction, he quite directly asked me "Why can't you understand this?" (his favorite question). I didn't know how to answer that, because obviously I know how to give change if I have had no customer complaints and a $300- even drawer every night for the last 3 months. He insisted on an answer, pounding on the table "Well? What aren't you getting? Why can't you get this?" All I could answer was "I do understand this", he insinuated that I was arguing with him and ordered me to leave the office.

Whenever he persists in asking why I cannot understand something and I try and offer a reasonable answer his conclusion invariably boils down to me not caring about the job. If I didn't care, I wouldn't have a bottomless Xanax prescription.

At this point in time we are entirely silent when we change shifts. He still banters me with absolutely ridiculous corrections, far out of the realm of anyone else's, and they always end with questions that I have to answer by insulting myself.

So, with a somewhat uncaring staff and a health problem, what should I do? I absolutely cannot lose this job, I'm trying to put myself through college.

About a year ago i used to work for a Religious school. The new boss came, and attacked me right away, including my religious beliefs. I'm curious who else has bullying from within a Religious Orig? I still haven't recovered from the attack, and the Church will not recognize the issue.. Especially since it "Core Beliefs" are about how we treat others, I find it odd...

So sorry to read this. I just found this site today and in the same position. Our company has an "ombudsperson". Can you find out if yours does? They are supposed to be there to help you in the event your management and HR don't or if you aren't comfortable going to them. They are put there to protect you. Good luck!

Recently, I went to HR to complain about a workplace bully that at the time, I did not fully realize was a bully (but suspected). I asked for a transfer and was told I needed to go up my current chain of command (next supervisor in line) to ask for that. As if the waters had not been poisoned already by my current supervisor, who acts sweet in front of senior management but in front of me is the wicked witch of the west. Wish I knew how better to handle this vicious person, it is affecting me so.

Hi,
A few months ago, I reported an APCM manager(after speaking with her three times to correct her payroll discrepancies before reporting her), we are lateral. She was claiming to work on the floor on weekends, nights, nurses and staffing reported she was not actually there. Since that time, I have been retaliated against vigorously. I reported it to compliance, no investigation was done, I reported it to her manager, he has not done anything about it. I followed the Code of Conduct, she has smeared my name. The other day, our manager sits down and says "Let's all be friends again." and it was all over with. Today, I went out on medical leave. 7 nurses have reported she has been smearing my name, claiming I have spies on the unit, cannot be trusted, that I have gotten her in trouble, etc. I have reported it multiple times. Not only that, I made copies of assignment sheets the past two years when she was allegedly in count(we get paid if we work in the count, over and above salary)when her name is definitely not there. I don't know what to do now except take legal recourse against the hospital. She has wrecked my life and nothing has happened to her. I have proof. People even volunteered to talk to our manager, yet he has not approached one of them. Anyone else ever in this situation?

Everyone is so concerned about out Magnet site visit next month; do we really deserve it? This woman has terrorized an entire group of employees.

Hello everyone.. wow I am so glad to have found this site! Finally, a place with *people who will actually believe me* and (hopefully) not just tell me im crazy.
Im an HR Analyst for a Corporate office [city/state name removed by moderator]. Things started off fine, then after only a few months I noticed some strange behavior in my boss/tormentor. She would be really sweet to me for a while, then not talk to me for days (while continuing to be friendly to the rest of the department) which would drive me nuts wondering what I did to deserve the silent treatment? Little did I know that was just setting the stage for all the shit she would pull in the next 2.5 years, slowly building up their case & "documentation" to fire me and clear them of any wrongdoing.. New Years Eve the office was open, yet everybody got to leave early, around lunchtime. Though it was at the manager's discretion, and her 'discretion' was to let the entire department (7 people) go home around 2:00, while I stayed until 5:00. No explanation given. While I sat here alone, getting pissed off, crying & wondering what I did wrong.. and a couple people from other departments that were still here, saw me upset & decided to run and tell my boss. The next Monday I was still pissed, and went into the HR Director's office. She always seemed so kind, I had no idea what was about to happen.. I told her how difficult & unfair my boss was lately, what she did to me on New Years, and how she treats me differently than everyone else. She basically says that they don't have to let anyone out early, and it's her decision, im being a baby, im immature, I am consistently late (and she pulls out a freakin chart of my attendance that my boss made), that she has received "numerous anonymous complaints that I talk bad about my boss", even a screenshot of my [social media name removed by moderator]social media page (which is private!) where there is a quote that says something like "Not looking forward to seeing the Devil tomorrow", how I am seen with my cell phone out on my desk too much, etc.. and I end up getting written up. It proceeds to get worse from there. A couple months of more crappy treatment goes by and I get called into the Directors office again, this time to reprimand me for being "unprofessional" by telling someone how trashed my boss was at the company holiday party months ago. First of all, I never said the word "trashed". I said she was "funny, and should drink more often" jokingly.. yeah, that didn't go over too well. She said "Do you know how bad that makes her look? You are assasinating her character" Um, ok.. she made herself look bad slamming martini after martini.. but whatever. Needless to say I was once again written up..
The torture continued, this time my boss recruited more people.. the entire department. Everyone started giving me the cold shoulder, wouldn't even say hi to me if we passed in the hall. She was always so sickeningly sweet to all of them, kissing extra *** [word deleted by moderator] to the senior management.. just to make sure that when I complained, I looked crazy. Let me just add that im the only one here with young children, and im also the only one here that isn't married.. only single mother. I do sometimes have to leave work sometimes or stay home because of sick kids. And I get in trouble for it while others leave work early for concerts, plans with their husbands, hair appointments, etc.. a few months ago my daughter was critically ill with Sepsis and I missed a week of work and had to take all of my vacation days for it.. while others frequently miss work (more than me even) and get to keep their vacation days. I was treated disrespectfully when I returned, given the silent treatment yet again and I even got in trouble for talking about her illness with people in other departments. And to this day, not one of those b*tches has asked me how she's doing. Yet she goes out of her way to ask others how their dog or cat is doing, or how their allergies are, but my daughter almost dies and not an ounce of concern. Just last week I was called into the office again, this time about my attitude. A co-worker of mine started some drama, yelled at me, and I defended myself by calmly telling her to "grow up".. that lovely co-worker went to the Director complaining that I yelled at her for no reason at all (and played the victim very well).. Long story short (er, less long): They hate me, they want me out, they are dead set on making my life a living hell, twisting my words, building up their case, destroying my sanity until I eventually quit. Upper-management doesn't believe a word I say, because 1) they don't see it, she's always super sweet & professional around them, and 2) they have all been best friends for like 20 years, their loyalty to my Tormentor is much stronger than doing what's right. I have even brought up that I feel I am treated unfairly and hated because of either my age (Im 31, the rest of them are in their late 40s & 50s) or because im a single mother.. probably both. The Director said to me "Those are some serious words, and it is absolutely not true at all". Right.
They are the most snooty, uppity, set-in-their-ways, evil, cold-hearted, vile b-tches I have ever encountered. But my boss is the worst by far.. Ive been here longer than anybody else ever has in my position. Prior to me there were 3 people in two years. What they all had in common was not getting along with her. It seems she always has to have a target, this time it's me. And she can't stand that im still here..
She is always happy when somebody gets fired, it's really weird.. it's this sick satisfaction for her when somebody's life is falling apart. If any of you have ever seen "The Devil Wears Prada", that is her. And I am Anne Hathaway's character. I mean this in all seriousness, that woman is the devil. No doubt in my mind. Which reminds me, I need to start going to church.. LOL
What should I do? Of course I am sending out my resume, just not having any luck. It doesn't look like Family Responsibilities Discrimination is illegal in "my state" [state name removed by moderator], would I qualify for an EEOC claim? Should I try and hire a lawyer? And if I did either of those things, it is inevitable I would be retaliated against. I would be accused of more lies, written up for more BS. Though I want to find a new job, part of me just doesn't want to let those ******** [word deleted by moderator] win!! Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.. Thank you!

I was bullied by a serial bully a few years ago and have since become something of a lay expert/consultant for other targets. I was fortunate enough to have a good doctor and good benefits and was able to take a 7 month sick leave before a show down with HR. I refused to take mediation or return to the office and had my doctor write a letter about unsafe workplace. The back to work consultant deemed, quite angrily, that unsafe workplace didn't exist for my situation and wished me well in my job search. This is where I got lucky--an HR consultant totally believed me and knew of the track record of the egregeous boss I had. When the back to work consultant went on vacation immediately after ruling that I had the choice between returning to the office or not having a job, the kind consultant swooped in and managed to arrange a placement for me in another department, where I remain happily to this day. I had one incident with a person shortly after starting and when she tried to bully me a little, to test the waters I would say, I freaked out on her and was yelling etc. She complained to my boss. When he came to speak to me he said, "well, at least you tried something!" and ended up thinking highly of ME! I was so lucky--most people aren't.

Just noticed this Orwell quote on your website:

"In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act."

In the period before he wrote his two most famous works with institutional / corporate bullying at their heart, just guess where he was working?

Not sure how many British people belong to your website - but bullying@work knows no national boundaries. I have worked for a large, publicly-funded British media organization for almost 20 years, and throughout that time have witnessed institutional, corporate bullying by the majority of inadequate managers - and for the last few years, I've been a target.

I made two "mistakes". Management allowed a serial sexual harasser to get away with it several times, until his last victim insisted on ensuring he was disciplined. Instead of keeping them apart, management placed them both in my team to work together, telling the woman that if she confided in me, she would be the one to be disciplined. I was anxious to keep her out of harm's way (and even to protect him from more stress than the disciplinary was already causing him), yet I also needed 2 staff to work together as a matter of urgency (for Health & Safety and team work-load reasons) - so, I consulted my Union and hers. Bad move, that: showing the leadership and responsibility the so-called management did not.

My second mistake was being the best qualified to apply for a management job in our very specialized department. Colleagues suggested it and encouraged me, and I was one of only 3 people interviewed. The person who was given the job by our culturally sexist & homophobic head of department was thought to be an average, but perfectly pleasant nonentity - and I certainly thought we might be able to work together. He began bullying all those who had been there long enough to remember his undistinguished and uncharismatic career. His first target was me. Demoted to the most junior duties my job description would allow, banned from using any of my specialisms, and with the loss of one third of my salary.

Others have also been bullied, humiliated and sidelined. Infantilization, constant micro-managing, accusations of having broken rules that no-one knew existed (because he'd just thought of them), all either "justified" by lies - or sometimes not even justified with any answer at all. This is where HR came in. They took over a year to handle my Grievance, provided provably untrue information to mislead the Hearing Manager into not upholding it, and are now trying to trick me into making this a specifically "bullying" Grievance, as even the Unions know that in this organization, anyone invoking that Policy (window-dressing and lip-service, like most of their other Policies) would be "crushed" and "pushed out of their job by any means necessary". (Apparently, it fears public opinion and Freedom of Info requests about such matters: but obviously not enough actually to stop the causes of such Grievances!)

It's no comfort that such bullies' targets are usually the most experienced, creative and popular ones - we tend to be the people who are on staff, rather than short-term contracts; we have to be paid adequately; we belong to Unions; we have Pensions; we are well-educated & mature; we know our jobs, and know when we're being lied to. We're the ones who have to be got out using whatever it takes, and replaced with naive youngsters on low wages, so grateful for their short-term contracts that they'll put up with any amount of bullying - and terrified of joining a Union in case they're "seen as a troublemaker" (just for being a member of a Union)!

HR's role is to make sure we leave. As I said, we're the ones who come up with the good ideas, and who have the broadest range of skills and experience, so making us redundant isn't so easy. Making us want to leave through a campaign of piling on the unnecessary negative stress of bullying is their preferred method. Because we possess the qualities I've described, we're not giving in to it, so the bullying is escalating daily. People are getting ill and depressed. Within a month of my bullying being stepped up, I fell ill with a life-threatening physical condition, the only cause of which in a previously fit and healthy person of my age, the doctors have put down to an immune system crash "caused by workplace bullying."

Sad thing is, HR know that we - the ones they've been tasked with getting rid of - love what the organization was set up to do and love our jobs, our colleagues, and the public we serve (the same public who the management hold in even greater contempt than they do their employees) - so they're well aware of the physical and psychiatric injuries they're causing to our health, but do it anyway. It all appears perfectly legal, and there's no legislation in sight to stop it. The only thing that we "Davids" can do against these philistine "Goliaths" is blow the whistle, keep a low profile, keep within the Law - but make sure that slingshot scatters over a wide area.

I was employed by a Medical Office for 7 1/2 years. Two months a go I was terminated for not being able to "multitask". My roller coaster ride started 6 mos after I was hired. I was brought in by my office manager for my performance review and was told I was not as experienced as they thought I would be. I was hired as a surgery scheduler and never given training beyond 3 days. I was thrown into the position (which I clearly had never done before) and then told to learn as I went. I was publically bullied by two or more physicians. The office manager was an unqualified supervisor and my main bully. Now mind you I have been a target in the past and with your help am now realizing my part in all of these "doormat" experiences. It was not long after that experience that I was certain I was being targeted, undermined and sabotaged. I endured being transferred to receptionist, which I was very very good at. I have patients that will miss me for a long long time. In August of 2010 I was brought into the HR physician's office and told there were some problems again with my performance. The accusations were all hearsay and speculation. I challenged him to do some observing of his own. After three months he called me back into his office and told me straight forward that I performed the tasks of 1 1/2 people. I cried with joy. I was finally understood. At an office meeting in December we all sat down together and were told about his observations. We discussed the need for another computer terminal and phone at the front desk so that we could alleviate the bottleneck at the front desk. To complicate things during this time this office was being considered for a merger with the local hospital so I suspect there was some foul play there also. Then in January 2011 I was ambushed by a meeting with three other office workers who had complaints that I was not answering the phone in a timely fashion and consistently away from my desk. When I pointed out that I was absent when messages needed to be delivered according to office policy and that we had already determined that there were too many phone call for one person to handle I was told by the HR physician that I was being "defensive". I pointed out that I was being ambushed at a meeting that was not scheduled according to my schedule or with my knowledge and it was three coworkers against one. To make my long story more succinct I was terminated February 15th and now have a "termination" on my resume. I have been having trouble finding employment and I suspect my previous boss is continuing to sabotage my efforts. I am at my wits end as to how to solve this dilemma since I have no control over what is said about me. Hope this helps your book and others who visit this site.

I have to write this in total secrecy. I fear my bosses in the federal government. I read your August 5, 2010 article about HR being "bully friendly". I have had a properly licensed professional document the fact that I have been "psychologically abused" in my workplace for many years by a completely irresponsible and abusive personality in a management position. That behavior has been known for a long time. I can't even give you any details that might link me to this. Your article about HR being "bully friendly" is just plain scary in its accuracy. As you are well aware, people go quiet when their office coworkers are bullied by HR as the agent of management. Secrecy for those that want "power and authority" in SHRM without "accountability and responsibility" is a recipe for human disaster. The Gestapo had such powers to keep secret files on people. They didn't even read my complaint or talk to me at all. When I recovered from my mental breakdown, I took the advice to hire my own reputable psychologist to make the diagnosis. Pass the laws dude!

I have endured a similar situation re mob mentality. I work in a rural hospital with a department of 3 regular staff, one assistant, and three per diem employees. The manager is supposed to be a working manager. All three per diem employees are old friends with the male in the department. The manager took over from me because my staff was completely uncooperative, undermining my position by going to my boss, the CEO, with petty complaints, but which the CEO supported because to him, the numbers meant the complaints were legitimate. One of the per diems even complained that I wanted them to start cleaning up after each patient. The CEO was supportively outraged, and my directive was shot down. I stepped down as manager and they hired a new one from outside. The present manager is extremely insecure, and sickly, and has been out sick a total of about three months in the last 16 months. The male tech is "2nd in command" because when I stepped back to staff tech, he suddenly has seniority over me. Fine.
Well, since then, the entire department has ganged up on me and I went through the same kind of misery and depression. What saved me was the support of workplace friends and other managers who knew what was going on.
Then last fall I was forced back to part time status, while the main per diem tech was not cut back at all. The excuse was that her hours were necessary to keep and mine weren't. The union supported management. Come to find out, this situation was engineered by HR. When I complained to the union, they told me that they enjoy a 'good working relationship' with HR and that they 'had to' support HR, not me.
Meanwhile, my male coworker is now a union rep. He routinely violates the union handbook rules (leaving the workplace campus without clocking out, etc) with impunity. His opinion is that if he isn't caught, it's okay.
I filed a formal letter of complaint of workplace hostility and bullying, and since nothing I logged and documented could be categorized as happening because of my membership in the legally described "protected classes", I had no legal standing to accomplish anything on my legal behalf.
But HR "had to" allow the people named in my complaints to read them. Since then, there has been an obvious retaliatory effort to get me into trouble. No one wants me to be fired, because then who would do the work but those who enjoy the laziness they're accustomed to? They want me scared and silenced, and I refuse to be either. My only option to better mental health is to quit, and when it is safe to do so (financially), that's what I plan to do.

I work in a casino where everyone knows video survielence is in full force. I informed my new manager that my co worker was stealing. I had seen it go on for nearly a year and I was tired of it anfd his horrible work ethic. He would give items away to his family and friends whenever he decided.. He was the son of a department head and thought he was untouchable. Sure enough they pulled the tapes and fired him.

The trouble started when my manager came in to my store and in front of all the other employees said loudly so the rumors would start " Ill need you to fill out a statement about what you told me about M yesterday". I just got outted as the reason M got fired! (Not his on theft and survielience catching it but me!!

Human Resources also come in to the store the day he was fired and loudly said "Hey thanks for your help with that M situation". Further outting my confidentially.

To this day I get harrassed by other employees asking me where M went.

I hate HR. In my Hotel Casino they are the epicenter of all the bullying. I call the head lady Angel Of Death. Evil evil rude people!

I have the similar situation as yours. I have to quit my job because the bully and because it is gang up situation, I have not be able to find anybody from the work to be my reference. I can’t trust anybody. Those people who I have worked for 2 or 3 years and we have absolutely never have any conflict at all maybe turn their side to the dark anytime.

When the “Why do you want to leave your present job?” question comes up to you again? I have few suggestions for you here.

-Never bad mouth about the previous company, co-worker, supervisor. Use positive reasons.

1.An opportunity , a chance to do something special
Do you homework on the organization that you want to apply for, find out what is the opportunity or thing are special that your work place will never be able to provide that to you.

2.Use personal reasons:
•To attend to a one-time medical matter that is now taken care of
For instance – Co-workers#1 was doing the same job as I was and her reason to leave is something in the office is allergy to her nose.
•To look after the sick family member ( one – time deal )
•Go back to school – Co-workers #2 was doing my job as well and her reason to leave is go back to school to learn more things
•To take once in a lifetime trip – around the world
•To find a position- location that is close to your family

3. Blame it to the rain - anything that is not personal, but make sense. For instance: Safety concern. (Be careful not to conflict to present interest).

Bad thing happens, event serious crime can be excused by law why there is no law to control employer to back slander their employee. Is someone has conflict with others a crime? And only if you know what is the conflict about. Some people do their funny business over years and years or their job suppose to make the world better place and they have power to do so but they didn’t when other people come forward and honesty about what is right to do, they call these people trouble maker and peace crasher. I am not saying this to give the excuse for some law broker and violent behaviour employee. There are lots of fight in the office are fight over for power, jealous, and unfairness. People do fight to compromise the situation why can we have fair conciliation at workplace? I once watched a documentary about how the Communist runs their business and really it is no different from nowadays the thing happen in the modern office. I think workplace cultures are going backwards.

If you interested read this article. It is about a doctor tried to make the world different and end up been called a mental illness and forced out of his job.

Hello,

Refrain from bad-mouthing your current employer during the job interview; it will not help you to get a new job. Instead focus on the positive.

Suggestions:

"I am looking for a new challenge that will give me the opportunity to use my skills and knowledge, and to grow by learning new things."

or

"I am looking for an opportunity to do more challenging work, and to grow professionally."

--

Remember that future employers were never present at your past job. They likely do not know the bully you worked for. Also, the bully may be bad-mouthing you after you've left. It is best to present your best appearance for a new employer, bearing in mind that because of the economy there are so many people applying for a given job that even a past issue with your former employer (even one that wasn't your fault) may hinder your ability to get that new job.

Be careful and assume you are on trial, so to speak.

Regards,
